I’m speeding towards my latest vacation spot on a speedboat. As we jump, I try to take a selfie. The waves, the boats, the islands are the shots I want, but I can’t seem to get the kissing couples out of the background. No matter where I turn, there are honeymooners in my search engine. The boat operators and I are the only ones on this boat. I’m actually part of a couple too – actually a bunch of single girlfriends planning a getaway to Anguilla. I like to call the trip a we-moon.
So often, we save our dream destination for the day we can leave with the person we’ve agreed to spend our lives with. There are honeymoons and babymoons, but when can single women celebrate life milestones and fulfill their desire for companionship and adventure? This is our moon.
On the occasion of the last We-hold, I was invited by Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla and was joined by two girlfriends. Now you’re probably wondering: what’s the difference between this and the average girl’s trip? Well, much like honeymoons or baby weeks, we use our moon to celebrate life’s big milestones. For me, this was my first book. Single women often travel to celebrate others’ bachelorette, wedding or baby showers. We rarely find friends to travel and celebrate something that doesn’t fit into the typical timeline.
This is the purpose of our moon. It’s a phone call to ask your friends to travel and celebrate a success with you, just like you do for others. It could be a promotion, a new job, a master’s degree, or a book deal.
When creating the perfect we-moon, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure the journey goes smoothly. I spoke with Joy Harden Bradford, PhD, the author Nurses heal on the best way to have a drama-free destination holiday.
Book separate rooms.
On honeymoon or baby week, the point is to spend more time together. On Mi-moon, it’s a balance of time spent together and time spent alone. That’s why Dr. Bradford recommends separate rooms if the budget allows. We stayed in a villa for this trip to Anguilla so we each had our own room and bathroom. It was perfect for early risers who wanted to quietly read a book on their balcony, or late sleepers who wanted to go to bed and order room service. Whatever you decide, you need to talk about it beforehand.
