You can tell a lot about someone by how they talk to their dog. It’s not whether they do it, almost everyone does it, but how. Some say a quick hello and move on. Others treat it all like a conversation with a housemate who has opinions, moods and stakes for the day.
“What do you think, um? Shall we do the good treats today?” No response is expected. That was never the point. People who talk to their animals like this tend to share a handful of warm little qualities, and once you start noticing them, you’ll notice them everywhere.
1. They notice how everyone feels
People who talk to their pets usually read them all day long. The flattened ears, the slow tail, the way the cat left the room as soon as the suitcase came out. They tell it because they are already paying attention. “You’re not sure about that, are you?”
The same radar doesn’t go off around people. The person who notices that your dog is worried is often the one who wakes you up to the fact that you were silent at dinner, or that a friend’s “I’m fine” message wasn’t quite right. Attuning to a being who can’t explain himself proves to be good practice in attuning to people who simply won’t.
2. Complete lack of self-awareness
You don’t have to care much about how you look to talk to an animal in public in a baby voice. And these people don’t.
They cuddle in the vet’s waiting room, have an entire conversation with a parrot, ask a goldfish how his day was, all without feeling embarrassed. There’s something liberating about being around someone like that. They got out of the show that most adults run all the time.
If they’re willing to look a little silly for a cat, they’re usually comfortable looking silly. This makes them easy, comfortable company.
3. Thinking out loud
Many pet conversations are really just thinking out loud with a witness. “Where did I put my keys, hm? Any ideas?” The dog won’t help, but the point is to say it.
People who process in this way tend to have a natural appearance: they process things by talking, and it doesn’t matter if anyone is watching. The same habit can be seen in how they handle a problem at work or a disagreement with a friend. They talk through rather than close, making them easier to read and easier to trust.
What happens to them is usually visible because they already say it.
4. They are loyal to a fault
Someone who refers to their cat as their son says something about how they bond. When they let a creature in, they let it in all the way. Get a nickname, birthday, place in the family group chat.
This kind of devotion rarely stops at the animal.
They’re often the friends who remember the date of your surgery, the ones who check in on the anniversary of something difficult, the ones who treat the people they love like company. The pet receives just the most spectacular version of loyalty, which is distributed widely. Once you’re on their list, you tend to stay there.
5. When something small needs to be taken care of
Notice how gentle these people are to anything that is helpless. The three-legged rescuer, the nervous educator, the ancient dog who can hardly see anymore. They mostly speak to the fragile, softly and constantly, as if the words themselves mean a kind of care.
You will see the same tenderness in a crying baby, an elderly parent, a friend who is barely holding it together. Some people are simply moved by things in need of protection, and this shows primarily in how they treat a small animal that trusts them completely. It is one of the most endearing things a person can be.
6. Give everything a name and backstory
Never just a dog. It is Sir Reginald who is very gentlemanly and disapproves of the postman. The cat has a whole personality, anger, favorite song. The hamster has political opinions.
It is the imagination that refuses to fully grow up.
People who assign an elaborate inner life to their pets are usually playful in every other corner. They name their car, invent sounds, change a boring task a bit. There’s a lightness to life around them because they’re forever making things a little more fun than they absolutely need to be.
7. They pay more attention than it seems
People who talk to their pets are often the best listeners to people. The one-sided chatter at home seems to leave them with a lot of patience for the real thing.
They allow you to finish the story without jumping in. They ask the following question. They remembered that little detail you mentioned once, weeks ago. Perhaps practicing warmth on a being who never interrupts makes it easier to impart that same warmth to those who do. Whatever the reason, it’s often the friend who chats with their dog that lets them be heard best.
Of course, the dog didn’t understand a word of it. That’s part of the charm. Speech was never meant to be understood.
So the next time you catch someone deep in conversation with a being who can only wink at you, take it as a good sign. This usually means that there is a lot of heat in there, we are looking for somewhere to go, and we are happy to start with whoever is closest.
