The version most widely spread on the Internet revolves around quantum entanglement and the suggestion that consciousness may exist in “another dimension.” It sounds like most people would dismiss it when they see it. This reflex is worth stopping.
A more useful answer is to think carefully about what they actually claim, what the evidence supports, and where the language gets ahead of the science.
The class of theories in question treat consciousness less as matter enclosed in tissue and more as a field-like structure that interacts with the brain. What the theory actually suggests
Remove the framing of the headline, and the basic claim is modest in one sense, radical in another. It suggests that consciousness is not necessarily produced by neurons firing in isolation, but may involve physical processes that are not limited to a single point in space.
According to Meijer, the physical size of the brain does not limit the information it can access, precisely because the relevant field extends beyond it. Some versions rely on quantum effects.
