Big moments deserve all the credit. Weddings, trips, birthday dinners, where everyone shows up and someone gives a speech. But these are not usually what keep friendships together.
Look at the friendships that actually lasted, that are still there after twenty years, and you’ll notice that they were built in a much less dramatic place. In the boring hours. The nothing afternoons. During those times when you were both around and not doing much.
This is why boring things, not great occasions, capture friendship.
1. Nothing needs to be done
No one is on their best behavior on a dull afternoon. There is no event to rise to, no version of yourself to present. You’re just there, a little tired, a little unfiltered.
That’s where real knowledge happens. Big occasions bring out the polished version in everyone. The good clothes, the good atmosphere, the stories told in the room. But the friend who saw you slumped on the couch on a gray Sunday and didn’t say much saw something true.
You can’t experience an ordinary afternoon. There’s nothing to hide behind. And being known as such, not fulfilling, is what makes a friend feel at home.
2. The low-stakes lounge
Lasting friendships usually have default settings that cost next to nothing. Management of common matters. Sitting in the kitchen while one of you cooks. A walk without a destination.
These hangouts require no planning, no money, or no reason. That’s exactly why they keep happening. A friendship that connects only for big events rarely meets because big events are rare and difficult to organize. There is always a friendship that can happen over a boring Tuesday coffee.
Frequency beats intensity. A friend you see every few weeks for something small will stay closer than a friend you see once a year for something spectacular.
3. The conversation was not allowed to go anywhere
Real friends can’t talk about anything at all and are fine with it. The conversation meanders, dries up, restarts around something on TV. There is no pressure to make sense.
You will notice that this is impossible with people you do not know well. With them, every silence needs to be filled in, every topic has to justify itself. You can say to an old friend that “you saw that place on the corner closed” and let ten minutes of nothing happen.
Boring togetherness is a sign of trust. Not everyone gets there. Those who do tend to stick around.
4. When one of you is just background
Some of the best friendship times are barely communicating. One of you is scrolling, one of you is half asleep, you are both in the same room doing separate things.
This is a stage that many friendships never reach. Early on, being together means actively entertaining each other. Only later do you get to the convenient version, where you can share a seat without having to fill it. A friend with whom you can sit in silence is a different category than a friend with whom you have to talk all the time.
This light presence in the background is one of the better signs that the bond will last.
5. Showing up for things that aren’t fun
Lasting friendships are those that appear even on boring, thankless days, not just on holidays. It helps with movement. He is sitting in the waiting room. Come over if you’re sick and don’t have much company.
Anyone can come to the party. The party is easy. You remember the friend who shows up on a rainy Saturday to help you carry boxes for three flights, then ends up eating cold pizza on your floor because you haven’t unpacked the plates yet. There was nothing in it for them. That’s the whole point.
In those enchanting hours, friendship proves what it is made of. He does not forget the friend who appeared to them. And they don’t forget that you don’t either.
6. The running thread that you take back
Long friendships involve conversation that never ends. Weeks later you pick it up mid-sentence and refer to the last thing you talked about as if there was no gap.
It’s just the regular check-ins, the little updates, the ‘oh what I was telling you about, this happened, this happened’. Dramatic confessions are not what weave two lives together. It’s the accumulation of small, boring updates over the years until they each carry a record of the other’s life.
You know the name of their annoying co-worker. They know how your father’s surgery went. This thread is friendship.
7. You don’t need to reach the connection
Last friends don’t need a reason to contact you. Stupid photo. One-line text about nothing. “Thinking of you”, no follow-up needed.
Weaker relationships wait for a reason. Birthday, favor, some current news. Powerful people burn contact for no reason, because contact is the point, not what’s attached to it. You will get a message with just the name of the previously played song and that’s the whole message and it means everything.
Reaching for nothing is only possible if friendship itself is something.
It’s takeaway
If you have a friend with whom you mostly do nothing, you may have underestimated it. The boring hours you have listed do not fill in between the real moments. These are the real moments.
Think about who these people are and whether you’ve thanked them lately for all the nothing you’ve done together.
