When someone uses the silent treatment, the first thing you need to know is that they are aware of what they are doing. You know it’s a used tactic to gain controlbasically a form of manipulation.

If you let them know this, they will be reluctant to continue acting in this way. They might even start talking when you say that… maybe.

2. “I’m not going to play this game with you.”

For some people, the silent treatment is a sick game. In this case, you should let them know that you will not be playing with them. A statement is all it takes to establish your position on the situation. You should then go away and leave them to their own thoughts.

If you say this phrase firmly and look them in the eye, they’ll know you mean business. If you’re not willing to play along with immaturity, they’ll at least resort to something else, maybe being a decent person and communicating properly.

3. “Speak when you’re ready to talk.”

Another way to subtly let them know that you won’t buy into their nonsense is to offer an opportunity to communicate later. Tell them you’re ready to talk when they are. This gives you both some space and puts the ball firmly in your court. Remember, you should never beg for basic respect. But it doesn’t hurt to give them space.

4. “I think I need some space too.”

Always remember that you are important and deserve peace and respect. If someone gives you the silent treatment, that’s fine. Just use this quiet time to enjoy the peace and space for yourself. Let them know that you are using their silence to enjoy your own silence.

Sometimes it works because they see that you don’t give in to their childishness. You’d rather just use their absence to enjoy your alone time.

5. “I won’t let you control me.”

6. “Your silence reflects your maturity.”

Another thing you can do is let them know that their actions are about them, not about you. If they choose to be immatureit just means they are childish. If they choose to be evil, it is because they choose to be cruel. Just because it’s being dealt with quietly doesn’t always mean you did something wrong.

Just don’t participate at all

And then there’s this phrase, it says nothing. Sometimes, no matter what you say, they make up their mind continue the silent treatment. The only thing that gets through to some toxic individuals is your own silence. And it’s not your responsibility to remind them that they should do better. Confronting them can be a waste of valuable time.

And staying strong through it won’t always be easy. Until you see these toxic actions for what they really are, you will probably keep beating yourself up about it. You may now be convinced that what they are doing is your fault, but it is not. It really reflects their ignorance or character. So be gentle with yourself no matter what and stand your ground.

Not all of these terms will carry equal weight in the fight against the silent treatment. And not everyone reacts to these terms in the same way or at all. You should be prepared for all possible responses when using these terms. But one thing is for sure, you stopped the mud and stayed strong in the silent treatment of someone.

Congratulations on every step you take toward emotional freedom.
