Sit or stand with your back against a tree. If you feel safe, close your eyes. Feel the trunk of the tree on your body. Consider how simple wood is. It is not an attempt, an aspiration, or a judgment.

It is a living, peaceful presence. Let that presence—that unconditional support—support you. There is nothing for you to do now. (pause) Feel the weight of your body on the ground.

The feeling that your feet or legs are on the ground. Consider the living things beneath you—microscopic, invisible, subterranean creatures that support and sustain everything around you.

We thank them for sharing their space. Feel the presence of the earth that holds you up. Notice the support you give without asking for anything in return. Feel the living energy of the earth.

(pause…)

Notice if allowing yourself to be quiet brings out the emotions. If so, let those feelings be with you.

When we take time to be present, it’s normal to notice that emotions, especially unpleasant ones, arise. You wouldn’t be human without emotions! Notice the temperature of the air on your skin.

Tune in to the aliveness of your body, feel that temperature, and if there is a breeze, feel it on your skin. Take a few deep breaths. Give thanks for the free, nourishing air flowing into your lungs.

Feel your lungs expand and contract, and feel the air nourishing you, keeping you alive.
