Study 7 chakras it comes from Eastern spiritual traditions that see the seven primary chakras as the foundation of our human existence. Similarly, Western approaches today place great emphasis on the seven chakras as representations of different aspects of our lives, describing their function in different terms that include psychological, physical, energetic and spiritual aspects.
An overview of the 7 main chakras

The basic human chakra system, as generally accepted, consists of seven chakras that extend from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Their names, places and corresponding chakra colors are:
- Root Chakra — the base of the spine — red
- Sacral Chakra — just below the navel — orange
- Solar Plexus Chakra — stomach area — yellow
- Heart chakra — middle of the chest — green
- Throat Chakra — base of throat — blue
- Third Eye Chakra — forehead, above between the eyes — indigo
- Crown Chakra — head top — violet
Sometimes a Sanskrit name is used instead of plain English, since the study of the chakra system as we know it in our modern Western culture mostly comes from the Indian yoga tradition. They are sometimes referred to as:
- “Muladhara”
- “Svadhisthana”
- “Manipura”
- “Yesterday”
- “Vishuddha”
- “Any”
- “Sahasrara”
The seven chakras in the human body
The seven chakras are usually associated with the following body parts:
- The first is in the perineum, in the tailbone area
- The second can be seen on the lower abdomen, a few centimeters below the navel
- The third is for the solar plexus
- The fourth is in the center of the chest, slightly to the left of the physical heart
- The fifth is for the throat, the carotid plexus
- The sixth to the point between the eyebrows or “third eye”
- The seventh is on top of the skull
It is important to note that the placement of the seven chakras varies slightly depending on tradition or school of thought. Some place the second slightly to the left of the body, at the level of the spleen, while others place it lower, at the level of the gonads.
Even though the 7 chakras are associated with certain parts of the body, they are not “physical” entities per se, but belong to the realm of “subtle energy”. They can be described at the intersection of the material and the immaterial, the biological and the spiritual, and together they refer to body, mind, and spirit.
Explanation of the 7 chakra system
The 7 chakras are part of the most commonly known chakra system, which consists of seven energy centers located along the spine and ending in the brain, from the perineum area to the top of the head.
The mainstream chakra system is based on a Hindu chakra system that recognizes seven distinct “wheels” or “energy centers” that are in constant motion along the spine of the human body. Each with its own color and vibrational frequency, these wheels are catalysts for consciousness and human functioning. They govern a variety of emotional issues, from our survival instincts and self-esteem to our ability to communicate and experience love.

What is Chakra Balancing?
A big part of learning how to work with your chakras involves balancing your chakra. Chakra blockage and imbalance in one or more of the 7 chakras can trigger mental, emotional, physical and/or spiritual illnesses. Whether you use chakra stones, crystals, reiki, or another form of vibrational healing to restore chakra balance, knowing the chakra systems, how they work, and the areas they govern can be invaluable.
In order to balance the chakras and heal with the chakra energy system, a practical knowledge of the chakras and their functions is required. While the basic chakra chart shows the seven basic chakras, did you know that there are additional chakras to consider?
Beyond the seven chakra system
It is important to understand that we are all made of pure energy and share it with the Earth – which gives and sustains life. Nevertheless, the more complicated system of 12 chakras shows how closely we are “connected” to the planet. An energy cord is estimated to extend three feet below the surface of the Earth into space, connecting each person to the planet and the universe.
